Harts Lane, Burghclere, Newbury, RG20 9JY
Rather than just another pub, The Carpenters Arms is a proper country pub where people and dogs are genuinely welcomed. It has a selection of good, honest pub food, real ales from local brewer Arkell’s and delightful accommodation. With plenty of pubby character and really friendly, cheerful staff, this bustling inn has a good mix of both locals and visitors. It is comfortable and understated with stools, lots of tables and a roaring log fire in wintertime. And pubs don't come in settings much better than that of The Carpenters Arms, either, which overlooks Watership Down, the inspiration for the famous story and film written by Richard Adams.
The pub was indeed honoured be the venue for Mr Adams' wake after he sadly died in 2016.
