Review: The Cher Show @ Manchester Opera House

The Cher Show tells the incredible story of Cher’s meteoric rise to fame, flying in the face of convention at every turn. This HUGE new production features a fresh take on her show-stopping costumes which earned her the title of "the ruler of outré reinvention" (VOGUE). Written by Tony award-winning Rick Elice (Jersey Boys), this brand new UK production is directed by Arlene Phillips (Grease, Starlight Express), choreographed by Oti Mabuse (double Strictly Come Dancing winner), with costumes by Gabriella Slade (Spice World Tour, SIX). Last night we attended the opening night in Manchester!

It was a dazzling glitter fest sparkling with Cher’s signature wit and style to the sounds of her biggest hits, including If I Could Turn Back Time, Strong Enough, Gypsies Tramps and Thieves, The Shoop Shoop Song, I Got You Babe, and Believe. Debbie Kurrup, Danielle Steers and Millie O’ Connell each play Cher in different stages of her life and the highs and the lows of Cher’s story are brought to life with incredible performances by all three actresses. 

Lucas Rush also plays a fantastic Sonny whilst Jake Mitchell dazzles as Cher’s legendary costume designer Bob Mackie. The costumes worn by the whole cast are stunning as is the dazzling set and lighting. Sam Ferriday plays many roles including Greg Allman, Phil Spector and Rob Camilletti and is equally convincing and spectacular in them all. Cher's mum is played by Tori Scott and she brings a brilliant comedy element to the production.

All in all it is a brilliant feel good show leaving the audience smiling and feeling nostalgic.

The Cher show is on at Manchester Opera house until 21st May before continuing its' UK tour. Book now for a joyous party musical fit for the Queen of pop!
