Last night the brand new musical & Juliet, had its West End opening night at the Shaftesbury Theatre, with a number of celebrities joining the cast to celebrate!
This fun, upbeat and empowering show explores an alternative ending to Shakespeare's famous Tragedy- what if Juliet didn't kill herself? Go on a hilarious musical journey with Juliet as she discovers herself and proves there really is life after Romeo!
& Juliet's musical creator Max Martin has written some of the biggest hits of the past 2 and a half decades, winning 5 Grammy Awards, The Polar Music prize and ASCAP song writer of the year which he has won 11 times. He has created songs for the likes of Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran and Katy Perry. The show includes versions of his much-loved pop anthems including Britney Spears’ Baby One More Time and Justin Timberlake’s Can’t Stop The Feeling. It's no wonder that celebrities including Simon Cowell, Liam Payne, Ed Sheeran and Jessie J were there to show their support and celebrate with him!
The telling of the famous story has fewer tears and a lot more dance breaks. The star of the show, Miriam-Teak Lee plays Juliet at her best, full of fire and calling the shots! When asked about playing one of the world's most popular characters, Juliet, Lee said “At first I was like, oh my goodness, this is really daunting, whose shoes have I got to fill? But then I had this understanding about not trying to be another actor who’s done this role. This is about being able to find this journey on her own, so it’s more about self-discovery now.”
Not only does this
show story take the biggest love story of all time and completely spin it on
its head, but it cleverly incorporates cheesy pop music and even shows us a
whole range of love stories from diverse wonderful characters. Forget Romeo- a new love story begins!
